International Travel

With my next international trip to Labrador on the horizon, I find myself immersed in thoughts of preparation and all that goes into getting ready for an annual journey. From securing the necessary documentation to packing the perfect combination of clothing and supplies, traveling abroad requires meticulous planning and attention to detail. As I gather my passport, itinerary, and foreign currency, I can't help but feel the excitement of experiencing a new culture and exploring unfamiliar territory. Each trip is a unique adventure, filled with endless possibilities and unforgettable memories waiting to be made.

So why is it important to also fish abroad? Here are some compelling reasons:

Wide Range of Species - While America has a diverse range of both saltwater and freshwater fishing options, there are certain species and techniques that are significantly better in other parts of the world. For example, peacock bass can be found in the US, but their size and quantity cannot compare to those found in the jungles of South America. Similarly, sailfishing off the coast of Florida cannot match the consistent action found in places like Guatemala. And some species, such as Golden Dorado or taimen, simply do not exist in the US.

Improves Your Angling Skills - My numerous trips to the Upper Delaware River have undoubtedly made me a better fly fisher This is due to the wealth of experience I gained using techniques that have fooled the smartest of trout that reside in the Delaware River. Additionally, my saltwater trips to Montauck, NY have taught valuable lessons about using spinning tackle effectively and the time and place to employ the fly rod.

Enhances Personal Growth - Traveling outside of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in different cultures can make you a more humble, flexible, and grateful person. If it doesn't, then you may need more than just a vacation to help you grow.

Increases Appreciation for America - Having explored different parts of the world, I am often surprised by people who claim "America is the greatest country on earth" and it well may be but to not travel and experience other cultures seems like a one way biased opinion. Through my travels, I have gained a deeper appreciation for certain aspects of my country that I may have taken for granted, as well as identified areas for potential improvement.

Affordable Options Available - Contrary to popular belief, international trips can be just as affordable as premium fishing trips within the US. With some research and flexibility, you can find bargains to prime locations. Don't wait too long, or you may end up paying a higher opportunity cost.

Increased Connectivity - In the past, people may have been hesitant to travel abroad due to limited means of communication with work or family. However, with smartphones and messaging apps like WhatsApp, staying connected is easier than ever before - unless you are venturing into extremely remote locations. This allows you to be available in case of an emergency involving you or concerning loved ones.

Opportunities Constantly Evolving - There has never been a better time to explore fishing opportunities across the globe. There are more developed fisheries and outfitters than ever before. However, certain places may become unavailable due to political or environmental changes. Therefore, seize the opportunity while it's still available!

Even if I haven't completely convinced you to go on a fishing trip overseas, if it's even a thought in your mind, promise me one thing this week: GET A PASSPORT. Start the process NOW so you have no excuses if the opportunity arises - and when you receive it, let it motivate you to start planning. And if you want to be extra prepared, look into programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry as well.

Consider getting a physical and seeking advice from a travel health service. Taking care of our well-being can often slip our minds, and most people dread going to the doctor's office. firstly, don’t put yourself in danger, know your limitations and choose the trip your body can handle; secondly, some countries require or highly recommend certain precautions such as vaccinations or anti-malarial drugs. Make sure you're up-to-date on the basics and in good health - keeping up with my health has become even more important now that I have more traveling opportunities.

Have you ever dreamt of going on a fishing trip to Argentina to catch sea run brown trout, or perhaps to Alaska for giant rainbow trout, or maybe even to the Bahamas in search of bonefish? If so, and you've done your research, then go for it! However, if you're still unsure about traveling internationally for fishing, here are some factors to consider:

Language - If you're not used to being outside of your comfort zone, try to minimize the potential complications by choosing a destination where you speak the language. If that's not possible, then consider places where English is widely spoken.

Embarking on a journey to a foreign land can be daunting for first-time travelers. The unfamiliar customs and new surroundings can cause anxiety and uncertainty. To ease these feelings, it is recommended to travel with someone who has experience in international trips. This could be an experienced traveler or an outfitter, such as Riversage Outfitters, who specializes in hosting trips abroad. With their expertise, there will be fewer surprises and less stress during the trip. Riversage Outfitters goes above and beyond by providing detailed pre-trip packets for each location, ensuring that you are well-informed and prepared for any potential challenges. Do Your Research - While spontaneity and unexpected surprises can add excitement to a vacation, when it comes to travel logistics it's best to do your research beforehand. This will help identify potential issues and allow you to plan accordingly. Make sure you understand how things are supposed to go and have a backup plan in case any complications arise.

Don't be afraid to seek out unique experiences - venture off the well-trodden path and immerse yourself in the local culture. While staying at a resort can provide a comfortable and familiar experience, it often lacks the true essence of a foreign land. Instead, take a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets, indulge in a delicious meal at a locally-owned restaurant, or spend an afternoon relaxing in a nearby park, soaking up all that the diverse culture has to offer. Trust me, these authentic experiences will be far more enriching and memorable than any cookie-cutter tourist destination. So go ahead, step outside of your comfort zone and discover the true beauty and charm of other cultures - it will undoubtedly be worth your time and effort

It cannot be stressed enough - prioritizing safety should always be your top concern when traveling abroad. This is especially crucial for those who are venturing out of their home country for the first time. It's wise to choose a stable and established destination where you can fully immerse yourself in your fishing adventure and enjoy yourself without any worries. Being constantly vigilant and wary of potential dangers can greatly diminish your overall experience and prevent you from truly enjoying the trip.

Handling finances with care - The allure of a lavish fishing expedition in a far-flung destination can be strong, but it's important to carefully consider your budget before making any decisions. It may seem enticing to splurge on such an extravagant trip, but if it puts a strain on your finances, the experience may not be as enjoyable in the end. It's crucial to budget wisely and keep things within reason. Keep in mind that overspending on one trip could have lasting repercussions and limit your opportunities for future adventures

Without a doubt, there are plenty of valid reasons to hesitate when considering an international fishing expedition - financial concerns, time constraints, and the like. However, for those of us who have fallen under its spell, the one irresistible reason to go is because it's nothing short of addictive. No matter the toll it may take on our wallets or schedules, we simply cannot resist the call of new and uncharted waters. So why deny ourselves? Embrace this all-consuming passion and start planning your next epic excursion!
